Today the Aadhar scheme of giving a biometric identity card (unique identification number - UID) to all Indian Citizens was official launched by the Unique Identity Development Authority of India (UIDAI).
This scheme will be launched by post master general of Vadodara Lt Col D K S Chauhan at Fatehgunj head post office on Friday. The department of posts has requested citizens to obtain UIDAI card on production of some documents and the make the project a success. For details, citizens have been asked to contact Fatehgunj head post office between 9 am and 6 pm.
The card, named Aadhar, made by the Unique Identity Development Authority of India (UIDAI), can be obtained from the Fatehgunj head post office after submitting the relevant documents.
The unique number will store basic demographics and biometric information of each individual such as photograph, ten fingerprints and iris in a central database and can be used for various government and private services and benefits.
The UIDAI biometric card, which carries a unique 12 digit number, will be issued free of charge. It will be useful for opening a bank account, to obtain new mobile connection, withdraw NREGS money, obtain insurance policy and obtain ration card among others where it is required to produce identity and address proof.
"We have set a target of enrolling one million citizens a day by October to issue the UID number for about 600 million people over the next three years," state-run Unique Identification Authority of India ( UIDAI) chairman Nandan N. Nilekani said on Thursday at Bangalore.
