134th Annual Jagannath Rath Yatra Begins in Puri and Gujarat

Today, July 3, the 134th Annual Lord Jagannath's Rathyatra begins from the 400 year old Jagannath temple on Sunday at 7.00 am.

The annual Rathyatra or chariot festival occurs every year on the second day of Sukla Paksha (waxing cycle of moon) in the month of Ashadh.

This Rath Yatra takes place in Puri, Orissa and Gujarat.

In Puri,  three chariots of Lord Jagananth, Lord Balbhadra and Goddess Subhadra from Jagannath to Gundicha temple.

In Gujarat, idols of Lord Krishna, Lord Balaram and Goddess Subhadra are placed on chariots in the entire Ahmedabad city.

This day is know as Ashadh Beej in Gujarat, and the day is celebrated as Kutchi New Year.

People from outside the world also visit India to see this rath yatra.

The history of Lord Jagannath Rath yatra in Puri is more than thousand years old. And all these years what has not changed much is its religious fervor, tradition, rituals and grandeur. Perhaps that is the reason why this festival is still very popular among its devotees which attracts more than a million of them every year to Puri on this occasion.

Decorated elephants, gymnasts and acrobats performing astonishing acts are a feast for the eyes. They are accompanied by numerous Vaishnavite sages, headed by the Mahant of Jagannath Temple.
