Padmanabhaswamy Temple of Thiruvananthapuram Could become Richest Temple in India

Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala could well become the richest temple in the country after Indian officials have found a hidden treasure worth billions of dollars in a temple in southern India.

The diamonds, emeralds, and gold and silver coins and figurines were found in underground vaults in the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, which was the royal chapel of the former rulers of Travancore, in southern Kerala state. This treasures is valued close to Rs 1 lakh crore.

The temple came to highlight after a golden idol of Mahavishnu and a golden ‘anki' weighing close to 30 kilograms were unearthed from one of the six vaults at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple on Saturday.

The inventory of the temple here, maintained by the erstwhile royal family of Travancore, is being made by a seven-member Supreme Court-appointed panel.

The stock-taking process was ordered by the Supreme Court following a petition by advocate T.P. Sundararajan over mismanagement of the temple affairs.

The foundation of the present entrance gateway was laid in 1566 and the temple has a 100-foot, seven-tier tower besides a corridor with 365 and one-quarter sculptured granite stone pillars with elaborate carvings.

As of now, the Balaji temple in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh is believed to be the richest temple in the country, followed by Shirdi Sai Baba shrine in Maharashtra.
