Yingluck Shinawatra to becomes First Female Prime Minister of Thailand

Yingluck Shinawatra will become the first female prime minister of Thailand. She defeated incumbent Abhisit Vejjajiva in the general elections.

Yingluck Shinawatra is the sister of  Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who is currently in exile in Dubai due to a conviction for abuse of power.

With 80 percent of the votes in, results suggest Yingluck's Pheu Thai party will gain 251 seats, giving it a majority in parliament.

Speaking from Dubai, Thaksin Shinawatra praised the Thai people for turning out to vote in large numbers and gave his vision of a new government.

He said, "Let's start the new government with the new approach with the new attitude that we want to invite everyone to set the difference for what we can work together, for what we can do together for the country and for the people, so just forget the past."
