He will take up this new job of India's Foreign Secretary from 1st August 2011, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. He will succeed Nirupama Rao who will become India's next ambassador to the US. She will succeed Meera Shankar in Washington, sources said.

Hardeep Singh Puri, India's permanent representative to the UN, and Sharat Sabharwal, India's high commissioner to Pakistan, were also considered for the post.
The post of India's Foreign Secretary is a highly responsible bureaucratic post which is heavily involved in trying to get relations with Pakistan back on a firmer footing.
